TAP HEALTH TAP FOR A DOCTOR’S OPINION

HealthTap is a free Android/iPhone app for getting a doctor’s opinion or medical information. They’ve added a feature called “AppRX,” which has links to downloads of other health and fitness apps, along with ratings and descriptions. It’s great to have recommendations on health apps. Otherwise, navigating through all 40,000 could cause a health problem on its own.

CHECKING YOUR PHONE 150 TIMES A DAY

Over 1.55 billion people have smartphones, up 30 percent over last year, according to analyst Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins Caulfield Byers. And they check those phones 150 times a day.

Chrome is still our favorite web browser, and according to a recent Accuvant study, commissioned by the security firm ZoneAlarm, it is also the safest and the fastest –even though it’s only around five percent faster than others.

APT APPS

The same reader who warned us about app permissions has some good app suggestions. He had a lot to say. Our favorite: The Amazon App Store’s “Free App of the Day.” It’s a great way to get some $15 apps for free, though don’t be surprised if many are duds.

It took us more than a minute to find the Amazon App Store on our Android phone. (On the Kindle Fire, just tap “Apps.”) We had to go to “Settings” on our Galaxy S3 and tap “allow downloads from unknown sources.” What’s more, one of our security apps, the free “Advance Mobile Care” app, stopped the installation until we gave it the go-ahead.
