C40.org reports on what some of the world’s biggest cities are doing about pollution. C40 is a network of 40 large cities and claims that all together they account for one-eighth of the world’s population. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg chairs the group. Just looking at the list of cities is a geography lesson. Curitiba, Brazil, anyone? Curitiba means “Pine Nut Land” and it has 1.76 million people. (Joy loves pine nuts.) (The list has to be incomplete, by the way, because we think China alone has 40 cities bigger than Curitiba.)

NedHardy.com has some very funny lists. We liked the “9 Deadly Words Used by Women.” (The first word is “Fine.”) Also, a set of paintings called “If Picasso Painted Super Heroes.” Another list: “Famous Paintings Improved by Cats,” is hilarious. Or “34 Cleverly-Designed Inventions,” starting with USB cords that fit into each other to create an endless chain.

When Joy was logged into Bob’s Facebook account the other day, she was riveted by a news story about celebrity cellulite. Clicking on it, she was asked to install the Social Reader app, which automatically announced to all of Bob’s contacts that he’d just been reading about celebrity cellulite. His actual interest in celebrity cellulite is zero.

Amazon Cloud Player is a place to store and play back your music collection. You get five gigabytes of free storage, but any tune you bought from Amazon is stored for free. It was previously available only on Android devices but is now available on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch as well.

“Fitness for Geeks,” by Bruce W. Perry, $35 from oreilly.com, or $23 at Amazon.com, is all about diet and exercise to fit a geek’s needs. That means no bit of information is left out. Did you know that nearly a third of Americans so lack Vitamin C, they nearly have scurvy? That’s a disease sailors used to get on long voyages — till someone thought of packing along lemons and limes (which is how British sailors came to be called “Limeys.”) Captain Cook brought along sauerkraut and carrot marmalade on his famous voyage. Worked just as well.

FrugalDad.com has a run-down on the new Windows 8. With its new “Metro” system, the Windows 8 screen will look more like a phone screen, with a social app, a cookbook app, games, etc. A portable version will let you carry all your preferences on a USB stick. Then, when you plug it into another Windows 8 machine, you will see your familiar desktop and apps.
