“Camera Awesome” is a $3 app that is now available for Android, after 20 million downloads for iPhone. Use it instead of your phone’s camera app to take a panorama, a burst of action photos, or an image-stabilized picture. The editing mode improves your pictures with over 100 artistic effects, including an “Awesomize” button, and makes them easier to share.

AirCastLive lets you take a video or photo that shows up immediately on your friend’s TV. The catch: Both of you must be using either a Roku player or the Google TV set-top box. These devices are useful for watching Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon movies anaircastlived TV shows, so you may want one anyway. Roku streaming boxes are $50. This fall, Roku is coming out with its own TV set. It will connect to standard cable boxes, but won’t require a Roku player.

A lot of newspapers and magazines maintain public photo archives and nearly all of them are free. Recently, the Chicago Tribune” released its crime photo archive of “Gangsters and Grifters:” Al Capone and friends on the street and in the lineup. (They also spent a lot of time in Hot Springs, Ark.)
