“Corel Painter Essentials 4” can turn photos and drawings into pieces that look very much like paintings. It’s not the only program that can do this, but it’s based on one of the earliest. It has been seven years since the last version and with this version the company has managed to take a giant step backward, It’s not that the program’s new tools aren’t fun. Most of them are. It’s that the previous version from seven years ago had outstanding videos that practically held your hand every step of the way as you learned. You worked along with the guidance of a professional artist and the results were great. The company dumped all of that. Now if you click […]

Digital-photography-school.com has some wonderful tips and tutorials. The article on “couples photography” reminds us that stiff photos of grandma and grandpa aren’t nearly as nice as photos showing them holding hands and looking at each other.

People are taking — and posting! – around 1.8 billion photos a day. Back in the primitive time of 2008, they took 20 million a day. We now post twice as many — 44 million, every hour. By the way: only one percent are still taken on film. Bye, bye, Kodak; sic semper transit and all that.

We recently used ScanMyPhotos.com to have a big box of our favorite old photos scanned and placed on a DVD. They charged $159 but it was worth it. We then used Kooboodle.com to store them online, and this was free.

If you’re like us, you’ve sent and received hundreds of photos by email. Where are they now? “Lost Photos” is a free app for Mac or PC that can find them for you. Unfortunately, the free version will only uncover 100 photos. For $3, you can get all your photos. Not one of the first 100 photos we recovered were from friends. They were ads. So we spent the $3 to go the unlimited route. What turned up were 4,830 photos. The program has a nice photo carousel, making it easy to flip through them quickly. We saw old photos of relatives and friends we’d forgotten about, though we may not have the time to cruise through all 4,830. Lost […]

“YouCam Perfect,” is a free app for iPhone/Android, has been downloaded over 600,000 times. It improves “selfies,” those photos you take of yourself to post on Facebook and elsewhere, by removing wrinkles. We didn’t see much difference between the before and after, but heck, it’s free.

When you see an older celebrity pictured in a magazine and looking 20 years younger, you can’t help wondering if some trick is involved. Well it is, and we’ve discovered a way for anybody to do it. (No, it’s not botox.) It’s a $50 program called “Portrait Pro,” from PortraitPro.com. Take any photo in the computer and let the program work its magic for a few seconds. The results in Joy’s case were so stunning, she is reluctant to accept her old look. She will only walk outside now with the new “Portrait Pro” photo pasted on her face. (This has caused some comment.) You can see examples of before and after photos on their website. When you see it […]

“Multicolr Search Lab” fills your screen with similarly colored thumbnail pictures taken from ten million free-to-use photos on Flickr. All pinks and reds, for example. If you click on any of the tiny pictures (very tiny) it opens up. (By the way, Flickr gives you a terabyte of storage for your own photos.)

“Photofy” is a free app with lots of cool effects, frames for your photos and the ability to add captions. However, most of the design elements cost $3 per album, with each album having thousands of designs in it. Some of the sample graphics we saw were so good they could be used as ads.
