DEATH BY SELFIE

The news that Selfies have killed more people so far this year than sharks has received wide coverage recently. There have been 12 selfie deaths and eight deaths from sharks. We mention it again because the solution seems clear: teach sharks to take selfies.

FINDING DUPLICATES

“Duplicate File Finder,” for Windows XP on up, from Ashisoft.com, is a free tool for removing duplicates. Unlike many free programs of this type, it doesn’t download spyware and free offers of junk. We asked it to scan our “One Drive” folder (Microsoft’s storage service). It found 716 duplicates, wasting half a gigabyte of disk space. Like all other programs of this type, eliminating duplicates is a bit tedious. For safety, it requires you to check a box next to each duplicate. If you accidentally mark both copies for deletion, it prompts you to unmark one of them. If you don’t have time to review the duplicates, click “save results” and go over them later. The program sends dupes to […]

ORGANIZING PHOTOS

A reader asked us to find a service that would consolidate her Facebook,  Flickr, Shutterfly, and Picasa photos all in one place. This is the holy grail of photo organizing. Flickr.com‘s new tool “Uploadr” is at least halfway to that goal. Any time a new photo comes into your computer, whether from a camera card, your phone, or an email attachment, it automatically uploads it to your private Flickr account. Uploadr  also consolidates anything you’ve saved to Apple’s “iPhoto” or “Dropbox” online accounts. You’ll be able to see your […]

Aluminyze.com will turn your photo into anything from wall art to a license plate. Joy took a photo at a woman’s club event and had it aluminyzed for the chair of her committee, who typically receives a gift certificate at year’s end. This was different.

THREE GOOD APPS FOR IPHONE AND ANDROID

— “Next Move Quiz” is our favorite new iPhone/iPad app, free from educational book publisher Pearson. The app has fun and colorful quizzes for kids and adults in subjects like science, geography, food, sports, culture and history. Joy has a lot to learn about currency but aced the human body quiz. You can retake quizzes. “Quiz Up” for Android is similar. — FaceTune is a $5 app that goes way beyond blemish removal in photos. Want a thinner nose, a wider smile, and a forehead whose skin tone matches the rest of your face? (Joy’s bangs keeps her forehead white; like a baseball cap.) It can also sharpen facial details while blurring the background and adding other effects. This app […]
