The easiest way to share a photo from your smartphone is to tap on the little thumbnail picture in the photo gallery. Next tap the “share” icon, and choose one of the options, such as email. That’s the quick way, but old-fashioned printing isn’t going away.

“MacroDroid” automates familiar tasks. You choose the trigger. For instance, set it up so that shaking the phone uploads the last photo to Facebook. When you’re in a meeting, have an automated reply send out a map link to your location.

Memorability is a free app for making photo books on your iPad. These aren’t the kind you print out, they’re meant to be seen on other iPads and include voiceovers. Send one to friends and they can add comments to the album.

WordsOn is a free Apple app for adding comments to photos and sharing them on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or by email. You can also add shadows, colors and special effects. For Android users, “Phonto ” is similar.

If like us, you don’t want to take the time to learn Photoshop but like turning ordinary photos into wacky bits of art, have we got the program for you. It’s Ashampoo Photo Card, and oh boy, is this fun. We put Joy’s sister into a British telephone booth, Joy’s face on a skyscraper, and Bob’s reflection in a mirror above a chest of drawers. We saved the results to disk so we could print them out, but these and dozens of other designs can be emailed, posted on Facebook or shown off on the Ashampoo website. Just.Me, free for Android phones, makes it easy to add photos, videos and voice messages to private text messages, though playing the videos back can be slow going. It remembers the groups you send messages to, making it easy to text them again. Everything you share is saved on a private, encrypted online storage space.

“Dupeless 3” is the new version of a small program for getting rid of duplicate files. It’s $8 from PC Magazine’s Utility Library or free for members who pay $20 for a year’s worth of programs. We paid.
Dupeless 3 removes the duplicates and you have some control over the situation. You can search by file name, content, or both. You can limit the types of files, such as photos or documents. Restricting the search is a good idea, otherwise the program shows you too many files that are part of the operating system.

“Front Flash,” a free Android app, lets you take “selfies” in the dark. A “selfie” is a picture you take of yourself with a smart phone. There’s no flash on a phone’s front-facing camera, so selfies taken in the dark are dark. But a sophomore at the College of Charleston, S.C., figured out how to use a phone’s bright screen as the flash. It’s new but already has had a couple hundred thousand downloads.
