The same reader who warned us about app permissions has some good app suggestions. He had a lot to say. Our favorite: The Amazon App Store’s “Free App of the Day.” It’s a great way to get some $15 apps for free, though don’t be surprised if many are duds.
It took us more than a minute to find the Amazon App Store on our Android phone. (On the Kindle Fire, just tap “Apps.”) We had to go to “Settings” on our Galaxy S3 and tap “allow downloads from unknown sources.” What’s more, one of our security apps, the free “Advance Mobile Care” app, stopped the installation until we gave it the go-ahead.

“Skit” from SkitApp.com for iPads (iPad 2 and up) makes it easy to create animations with your photos. Start with a friend’s photo or anybody’s — and use your finger to erase the body. Plop the head on an alien body and have another arrive by spaceship. Once you share the app, the recipient can edit the story to make it their own.

A reader tells us he bought a new Nikon Coolpix S9500 camera for $345. He asked the salesman “What’s that number in the lower left corner?” It was his elevation above sea level. The salesman then raised the camera over his head and the elevation number went up. “What’s that red arrow?” That’s the compass needle pointing north, he was told. It works with the GPS function. “Why does the number 180 come up when I press a button?” Because you selected panoramic view. When you press start, and begin to turn, it shuts off when you’ve done a half turn. It can also do a 360 or a floor to ceiling shot.

OddityCentral.com: Type “Photo Realistic Drawings” in the search bar to see the some amazing works of art. They’re pencil drawings but you’d swear they’re photos. Diego Fazo is a self-taught Italian artist who shows you his work in stages, so you can tell he’s really drawing them.
