The next version of the iPad will be here in three or four weeks, possibly Tuesday, February 1. So says Kevin Rose, founder of Digg.com, whose new newsletter, Foundat.io/n just broke the story. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras, just like the iPhone 4. The front/back cameras allow real time video chatting. The “retina display” means the pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels. Everything is sharper. The newsletter Foundat.io/n costs $4 a month, though the posted articles will appear for free on the website Revision 3, a week or so later. More info at KevinRose.com.

TekTrak.com has a $5 app that lets you track the location of an iPhone from their web site by entering the iPhone’s ID. The app will tell you where it is and where it’s been recently. Let’s hope your phone doesn’t run out of battery life first. A free version lets you try it twice.

Some competition is expected from Apple’s new social networking site, “Ping,” launched recently as a feature of iTunes, version 10. Because iTunes has been around for several years, Ping automatically has 160 million users. It is both Twitter-like and Facebook-like. You can have “followers,” a la Twitter, who don’t share in all your activities on the site, as well as friends who send you messages. Ping is just about music, however. You can find out what your friends are listening to and what concerts they plan to attend, as well as read their music reviews.
