TONS OF FREE MOVIES ON PLUTO, TUBI

Many years ago, a reader in Thailand blew up his computer by downloading movies from a site I recommended. Oops. Now you can get free movies from reputable sources like Amazon Prime, Tubi TV, (owned by Fox), and Pluto TV, (owned by Paramount). Tubi TV has a ton of free movies on demand, in categories like “Based on a Book” and “Most Liked.” They also have free TV, including oldies like The Avengers, Perry Mason and Columbo, and current shows, like Midsomer Murders and Master Chef. Among the 1200 kid movies, “Baby’s Day Out,” looks fun. Tubi TV has ads, but I don’t mind them. Pluto TV has lots of free movies and TV shows too. Categories include 70s Cinema, […]

ALMOST SCAMMED

My 91-year-old neighbor almost lost $100,000. She would have been wiped out completely if she hadn’t run to the bank. The scam started when she clicked on a message that appeared to be from PayPal. It told her she owed $500 and asked her to call. Unfortunately, she let the person who answered the phone take control of her computer. It didn’t seem odd to her, because Apple tech support often does that, with great results. My Jane Austen novels sound fabulous. The frames are large on my face, just shy of dorky. But the colors are cool: dusty blue, black, “chalk,” and brown. The tint on the lens is so light, they hardly look like sunglasses, though they offer UV protection. The privacy is great: No one can hear what I’m listening to unless they’re within three feet of me. Since they’re water resistant, I could theoretically listen while floating on a […]

BYE BYE AIRBNB

Lately I’ve been hearing horror stories about Airbnb, the vacation rental site that opened in 2008. Goodbye rave reviews, hello complaints. A friend said that the house he rented in Brooklyn, New York, for a family reunion was a total disaster. There were no sofas or chairs in the living room, and the beds were army cots. Every square inch of the dining room was crammed floor-to-ceiling with junk, including furniture and bicycles. The kitchen cabinets were filled to the brim with appliances, bowls and utensils, all covered in dust, circa 1945. After two sweaty hours, he gave up trying to make a clean space in this hoarder’s paradise. The next morning, in a breakfast nook without a table, the […]
