I’m planning to go on the “Holistic Holiday at Sea,” a one-week Princess cruise to Alaska. My artificially intelligent friend, Microsoft Copilot, has been so helpful, it practically wished me bon voyage. Now I won’t be unprepared. I started by asking it about the cabin types, something that both the website and the phone operator were frustratingly vague about. After answering this beautifully, it asked me some questions, encouraging me to get more info, just as if it were my mom or a superior travel agent. For example, I told Copilot that on my last cruise, when I was 14, I was dreadfully seasick until we stopped in San Francisco for the night on our way to Hawaii from Long […]

After buying my first expensive skin cream, I instantly felt buyers’ remorse. Had I wasted my money? The answer is “yes.” My education began when I spotted a YouTube video titled: “Number One Skin expert: three biggest myths about anti-aging, collagen and sunscreen, by Professor John McGrath.” McGrath is a professor of molecular dermatology at King’s College, London and editor of the British Journal of Dermatology. His research transformed our understanding of genetic skin disorders and vitamin D’s role in skin health. OK, so that’s awesome, but I didn’t have the patience to listen to McGrath for over an hour. So I went to Google’s “NotebookLM” to get a summary of it, then fired off my questions. You can do […]

A relative spent $6000 on Signia hearing aids, following the advice of her audiologist. A friend spent $389 for his Audien Ion aids, which were on sale on Amazon recently. They’re both happy. The Audien Ion hearing aid system comes with ear domes in two styles and three sizes. The system has four modes, depending on the environment you’re in. These include a normal environment, a noisy restaurant, heavy traffic, or the great outdoors. In each case, the aids reduce background noise and prevent feedback, which happens when the microphone picks up sounds from the speaker. The battery lasts 20 hours before needing a charge. But instead of fumbling with batteries, you just place the aids in their charging case. […]

As I stood outside a California restaurant waving goodbye to a friend, my phone stopped working. Had I been hacked? Even before it stopped working, it had slowed to a crawl. Then, just as suddenly, it sprang back to life. That’s how I was able to order a Lyft to get back to my sister’s house. Before I could enter my destination, however, the app thanked me for scheduling a ride with my pet. It also assumed I was going to a Monarch Beach resort. Weird. I don’t have a pet and I wasn’t headed for the resort. I hopped into the Lyft anyway, explaining to the driver, who spoke limited English, that I was going to a different address. […]

The new Google comes in two modes, regular and AI. “AI Mode” takes you on a deep dive. To try it on your phone or computer, do a Google search on “AI Mode” and turn it on, or if you see a laboratory beaker, tap it. I started by asking: “Were Native Americans typically more savage on a day-to-day basis than the early colonists?” AI Mode pointed me to Historum.com, which suggested that Europeans viewed Native Americans as “savage” due to customs like scalping. But it also said that Native Americans viewed European colonists as “savage,” because they killed or injured Native populations, ignored tribal land rights and tried to convert Natives to Christianity. The second link, from Quora.com, said […]
