ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS SHARES IN A BIG COMPANY
Stockpile.com lets you buy shares in a company such as Apple or Facebook as a Christmas gift. A share of Apple is around $120, so if you only have $60 to spend, that’s half a share. You can buy the virtual version online or a physical gift card at various stores, such as Kmart and Office Max. The recipient can trade it in for a retailer’s gift card, if they don’t want the stock.

Another reader recently upgraded to Windows 10 and said her computer isn’t handling her camera card as well as it did when she had Windows 7. Before she upgraded, she’d get a pop-up message every time she stuck in her camera card. This asked if she wanted to import photos or do something else. That was nice, but now she doesn’t get a pop-up. She’d like to go back to the old way but her time travel machine is in the shop. FUN WITH GOOGLE MAPS
Google Maps, a free app for smart phones, is now a tour guide as well as a path finder. Tap the “Explore around you” link. CHEMICAL OF THE DAY
ChemicalOfTheDay.squarespace.com gives you info on thousands of chemicals in the products we use. Joy switched her “natural” skin lotion after finding out it has phenoxyethanol, an aromatic form of ethanol that has raised some issues. Whole Foods and other stores have a variety of lotions without harmful chemicals. NOTE: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates there are approximately 75,000-80,000 chemicals in daily use, of which only a few hundred have been tested for toxicity. The European Union equivalent agency says the number is 140,000. A Canadian agency says about 30,000 are in common use.
