PRACTICING SAFE PHONE
If you’ve ever been in an airport or cafe, you’ve probably been tempted to use their free Wi-Fi connections. After all, that’s what it’s there for. This is dangerous without a shield, experts say; it’s a perfect situation for identity theft.

A COASTER FOR KIDS
PBSkids.org/catinthehat-– “Marvel Coaster” allows kids to create their own kinetic sculpture (like we’ve seen at some museums), but with artwork by Dr. Seuss. Arrange springs, racks and funny items on a grid, then pull a string to watch a ball roll and bounce along a track until it reaches its destination. You can extend or change paths at any time.

COMPARING GADGETS
Engadget.com/compare lists every gadget category you might think of, such as printers, computers, fitness devices, game machines, phones, speakers, you name it. When you click on a category, you get a list of the brands with the best reviews, and comparisons between them, as well as user comments. BACKING UP AGAIN
When we wrote about online backup from Backup Blaze, we heard from readers who said they couldn’t possibly use an online service. They have too much stuff to back up, like movie and photo collections taking up a terabyte or more. So we turned to “Seagate Central.”

WHAT’S THE FUSS?
Facebook paid 19 billion dollars to buy “WhatsApp.” What’s up with that? “WhatsApp” is an app, and it works with almost any smartphone to let you exchange an unlimited number of text messages for free. The app itself is free for the first year and a whopping 99 cents a year after that. We don’t need or use WhatsApp ourselves because we’re on a $30 a month unlimited plan from T-Mobile (with just 100 voice minutes). But we installed it anyway to try it out. A message appeared immediately warning us to uninstall two of our favorite apps, Battery Doctor and Mobile Care. Both are so-called “task killers” to prevent battery power loss. For us that’s a deal killer. Because […]
