According to the Linux Foundation, 81 percent of recruiters say that hiring workers who know the Linux operating system is a priority. Seems unlikely to us, but we’ll swallow it for the moment. We’re not sure which recruiters they’re talking to, but it wouldn’t hurt to get up to speed. “The Linux Command Line” by William Shotts Jr., $50 from nostarch.com, is the right book for that.

Thirty-nine percent of hospitals and doctors’ offices still use paper records and have no plans to switch to computers, according to IVANS Inc.a national health information exchange. The survey found they resist using new technology even if offered cash incentives to convert to digital records. Some said it was too expensive to switch, others simply shrugged and said that technology keeps changing.

We’re pretty sure we were the target of an attempted identity theft recently. Joy was asked to “verify” information on the phone regarding a recent credit card application. Bob was very suspicious, so Joy said, skip it, she didn’t want the card anyway. Even after she said that, she was asked to verify her birth date and other personal information in order to cancel. Whoop, whoop, whoop: Enemy attack! Battle stations! She hung up.
