Smithsonian Channel, free for the iPad, has hundreds of videos on science, nature, space, etc. We watched a three-minute video on a snow leopard who plays well with dogs, another on the ruby slippers in “The Wizard of Oz,” and one on the Oasis cruise ship, which has 21 swimming pools. (No diving.)

This leads to some interesting stuff, like how people have experienced different reactions, good and bad, to medicines taken at different times or different seasons. It kind of opens up a growing database of details that are seldom researched. You can also read what others have posted about various diseases and bodily ailments.

Smartphone users now represent a majority of all cellphone users, according to a survey by Pew Research. Among well-off college graduates under 35, smartphone usage is more than 60 percent. That’s an increase of 11 percent in the last nine months. In the over-65 group, only 13 percent have smartphones.
