How’s this for perking up your paranoia: 45 percent of employers monitor every keystroke typed by their employees — email, web browsing, chat, sports results, you name it, according to a survey from the American Management Association. That’s nearly half! If only the workers could use an encrypted keyboard.

For reading books and articles, or watching videos, Joy loves to hold her iPad. But if the urge to write a long letter strikes, there’s nothing like a physical keyboard. Our favorite is the new “Wired Keyboard for iOS devices,” $60 from Griffin Technology. It’s about three-fourths the size of a regular computer keyboard, but still easy to type on and small enough to carry in a tote bag. We found we had to press a little harder than usual to make capital letters, but otherwise it felt as good as other keyboards. Having a wired keyboard can be better than going wireless. Bob uses what is called a mechanical keyboard. That is, there is an actual switch under each key. Press the key and you close a circuit that sends a digital code to the computer, perhaps a letter or a punctuation mark.

Happiness is a new keyboard that lets your fingers fly. Joy is a speed typist and has complained endlessly about her Hewlett Packard keyboard. Bob is a slow typist, but complains endlessly about his keyboard anyway.
