If your kid likes your fitness tracker and wants one of his own, it might be best to skip the new “KidFit.” Adult trackers work much better. The KidFit we tried out is a tiny black orb that fits inside an uncomfortable watchband. The instructions are laughably minimal. At first we didn’t know – and weren’t instructed — to pop the working part out of the watchband and connect it to a charger. We kept looking for some way to connect the watchband itself. MadeWithCode.com, a Google-operated site, let anyone design a small custom bracelet that they made and mailed out for free. Honest! – We got one. Ours is green and says “Bob and Joy.” It took a couple of months to arrive. Now they have other projects, such as animated “Yeti” figures. Click “Projects” to choose. Many are free, like the animated greeting cards.

We won’t forget the time Joy racked up a $264 hotel phone bill for three hours of casual conversation with a girl friend. She’d run out of minutes on her smart phone, so she decided to switch to the hotel phone. A new phone plan from Virgin Mobile would have skipped that.
