We don’t know about you, but when we get an email with photos, we save them to an archive, where they sink into oblivion. We call it “The Land of Lost Photos.” Now there’s a program called “Lost Photos” that finds them in one swoop.

Lost Photos is a free program from It works with Windows or Mac. Download it and click “install,” then sign in with a Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, or iCloud account. Then, you can watch it comb your accounts for photo attachments or just continue working on your own stuff while it does its thing. Going through Joy’s email archive, the program uncovered over 200 photos in the first few minutes. Three hours and 5,000 emails later, it had found 3,401 photos. This might be too much of a good thing, but there you have it.

Once the photos are found, they’re automatically saved to your computer. Joy’s took up 802 megabytes of storage space, nearly a gigabyte. You should be able to go through a load like that in a weekend or so, and then email selected shots back to friends and family.
