The “Vonage Mobile” app lets us make calls locally and internationally without spending any of the minutes in our cell-phone’s T-Mobile plan. The key is the other person must also have downloaded the app, unless they’re already a Vonage customer. Since it’s free, why not? Go to VonageMobile.com and have a link sent to your phone via text message. The app works for both text and voice.

“QR” codes are doorways to other places. As you go through a newspaper or store, you will likely see some of these codes, square in shape and filled with dots and squiggly lines. Take a snapshot of them using your smartphone or tablet app for reading QR codes and they open to something else.

Our second new Tom Tom-powered device is the Nike Plus SportWatch GPS. Joy’s been walking and jogging up a storm with it. The watch comes with a tiny sensor you put in or near your shoe. Nike even makes shoes with a small pocket in the heel to hold the sensor.

The “BooqPad” is the first iPad case we’ve seen that lets you store a small paper notebook off to the side. Who doesn’t want to take hand-written notes once in a while? Actually, we still write things down every day.

We envy our friend Louise for the built-in hands-free speakerphone that came with her Toyota Prius. We’ve been in her car when a call came through and the sound quality was perfect. So we tried doing something similar in our car, using a Bluetooth device called the Jabra “Freeway.”
