When my Pixel 8 phone died in a pool of salad dressing, I sold it to Gazelle. They gave me $52, though it wouldn’t turn on. Besides iPhones, Gazelle also buys used iPads, Macbooks and phones made by Samsung, Google and Motorola. Whatever you send them, it will be carefully repaired, inspected and certified before being sold on their site. I got an instant quote, good for 30 days, and a swift payment. They even sent me a box with a free shipping label. All I had to do was check off options to describe it. I was glad I didn’t have to check the one that said “cracked screen,” though I did check off “won’t turn on.” The company […]

I just made a website with the help of artificial intelligence. It was fun, but far from perfect. AI did a good job creating a site for my magician friend, but a lousy job helping me tweak it. I had to start over. For example, when I asked AI to replace a photo with one of my own, it told me to click a non-existent “replace” button. I tried asking for more help, but the site just got worse and worse. By then, it warned me that I’d used 28 prompts, and the free trial only comes with 30. So I started over, and got a new batch of 30. This time, I used only the first prompt, by asking […]

Which is better, Android or iPhone? Whatever team you’re on, you’re unlikely to switch. Unless your family is on the other side. An Android-loving grandfather said he switched after his son-in-law couldn’t send video of his child, born seconds before. “He said the video wasn’t sending and he figured out it was me,” the reader wrote. “When he deleted me from the group, it sent, and every iPhone got it.” There would have been no compatibility issue if everyone had been using the free WhatsApp. So I asked Granddad why he didn’t suggest it, since he’d used it to send texts to his friends in Haiti. He said he didn’t want to make everyone else use a different app just […]

A techie friend and I had an argument over phone batteries. I said you should wait until a battery gets down to 20 percent before charging it. He said that’s wrong. Turns out he’s right. The old nickel-cadmium batteries had memories that could get messed up if you didn’t fully drain them, at least once in a while. But lithium batteries do better when kept at 50 percent and above, because they stay cooler when they’re not working as hard. Now that I know this, I often top off my phone, but I take it off the charger when it reaches 80 percent. This will extend its life too. Though I use an adaptive battery setting on my phone to […]
