breathometerWe wrote about the Breathometer when it was engaged in a crowd-funding campaign. Now they’ve raised enough money to put it on the market. It’s a $50 gizmo that plugs in to your iPhone or Android phone for an instant breath analysis.

The Breathometer measures the alcohol content of the incoming breath and gives it a number. If that number is .08 percent or higher, in most states you’re grounded. If the device registers any alcohol on the breath, a companion app on the phone will tell you how long it will take for you to be sober.  The app also provides a link to local taxi companies.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that In the U.S., more than 10,000 deaths a year can be attributed directly to drunk driving.  According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 1.2 million drivers were arrested in 2011 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That year, 226 children were killed in drunken driving accidents.
