My new $20 scale told me more about my muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat and other indicators of bodily health than I ever thought possible. I’m wowed. According to TechRadar, the Vitafit Smart Scale offers nearly the same results as the $8500 Tanita MC-780MA P. The review said it’s also about the same as the commercial models found in some gyms. A techy friend said it’s motivating him to exercise more, eat less. For each measurement, the scale tells you what’s normal or excessive, lean, standard or high. I was pleased to learn that my visceral fat score is one. The higher the number, the more fat. Healthy is between one and 12. Visceral fat is the […]

I think Venmo failed me. It looks like I may be out $150. Venmo is an app that lets you pay friends electronically. But my friend said she never got the money. So why did my bank deduct the $150 from my account? The bank said that was Venmo’s problem. When I called Venmo, I got a recorded message: “Venmo cannot cancel a payment sent to a registered payee. Only if the payee agrees can it be refunded.” But my friend won’t agree to cancel something that never happened. Even her bank told her to steer clear. I tried going to Venmo.com for more info, but my Malwarebytes Browser Guard flagged it as unsafe. I had to turn the guard […]

“I am in need of a new Android tablet and Windows laptop,” a reader wrote. “My tablet will only charge to 29% and my laptop has many problems and is almost 10 years old.” “Get one like my HP,” I suggested. I’ve always liked HP, and “HP’s Newest 14 Laptop Ultra-Light for Students and Business” is no exception. It’s $255 on Amazon and comes with 16 gigabytes of RAM, Office 365 for a year and Windows 11s. The “s” means its operating system is fast for a cheapie laptop. It lasts up to 15 hours on a single charge. But this month’s PC Magazine recommends the Acer Aspire 3, $279 on Amazon. For a bigger budget, TechRadar suggests the Microsoft […]

I accidentally got into a car with a stranger in Chicago at night. I thought the guy was a Lyft driver. Lyft and Uber have a problem. The drivers ignore your pick-up address. Instead, they use GPS. When you’re standing next to skyscrapers, GPS makes mistakes. When I was on S. Michigan Ave., for example, the Lyft driver’s map showed me on E. Adams St. “Where are you?” I texted the driver. “I’m right around the corner on Adams,” he said. On Adams, I saw one car, right where he said he’d be. I got in. The driver asked me where I wanted to go. “Don’t you see my destination in your app?” I asked. He looked confused. “Do you […]
