A reader wrote: “Two days ago my wife was nearly in tears after falling for a scam email that looked exactly like it was from the SAS Shoe site.” She was out $45 bucks. Others are being scammed by phony vaccine surveys. One reader said he was nearly taken in by a fake Pfizer survey, but hovered over the return email, which revealed sketchy-looking characters. If you do a Google search on “PSA post vaccine survey scam,” the US government at ICE.gov will show you exactly what the scammer’s email looks like. Don’t worry if you’ve already opened one. Just don’t click anywhere or open any attachments. There’s still time to panic. Google Pay and Mint Track Your Spending Sometimes, […]

I’ve rarely seen my favorite 11 year-old pick up her phone. She’s not addicted the way other children are. That’s because she uses a flip phone. I recommend it to parents who are worried about obsessive smartphone use. When my friend was 9, I gave her an old Jitterbug phone that came to me for review at least 10 years ago but still works. Besides texts and calls, she finds it handy for taking pictures of school assignments. She also snaps photos of billboards for events her family might want to attend. Perhaps because it’s so old, its photo-forwarding feature no longer works and its call quality is sometimes choppy. But it’s a great example of how flip phones offer […]

A $100 projector can give you a 10-foot wide viewing area. I saw one from Epson, a quality brand, for $70 on Amazon. But according to CNET, TVs are the better buy, thanks to a rapid drop in prices and improvements in technology. The big ones used to cost upwards of $10,000. Now you […]

DNA tests have found some living relatives for me. But did they get my nationality right? Ancestry, 23andMe and MyHeritage all say I have zero Native American. Mom said I’m one-eighth Cherokee. Should I believe them or Mom? I’m thinking: “Dear departed great-grandfather, I wish I could talk to you and your tribe. Are you my step-great-grandfather or a full-blooded Indian relative?” A blogger at ReviewGeek says he knows for a fact he’s eight percent Romanian, thanks to his great-grandfather. But his DNA results show no Romanian. Why? The Romanian samples at 23andMe aren’t large enough, he says. Maybe that’s why my results show no Indian. There are over 12 million users at 23andMe. Ancestry.com has over 15 million. MyHeritage […]
