I sent my favorite 11 year-old a personality quiz based on her favorite Amazon series. Then I made a better one. You’ve probably seen such quizzes on Facebook and elsewhere. Perhaps the most famous is from the New York Times. If you search on the phrase “New York Times quiz how y’all,” it comes right up. It figures out where you’re from based on the words you use. They marked me as a Californian, which is right on target, since I grew up there. One of the words that helped them decide was my use of “crawdad” instead of “crayfish.” But they also figured I’d spent time in Reno, Nevada, which I had, as a college student. To get started […]

There are many ways to get scammed on the web. Identity theft is just one of them. False photos are another. A friend of mine nearly got scammed by someone advertising a rental unit on CraigsList. It seemed so fishy, she did a Google image search on the photos he posted. The same photos turned up all over the web– in obviously fraudulent ways. She stopped just short of sending in a $4000 deposit. Here’s how to check out an image in a Google search. First, save it to your computer by right-clicking and choosing “save as.” Then on the web, go to images.google.com. Find the picture you saved. Click and drag it into the search box at Google Images. Many […]

I rarely carry a physical wallet. I prefer the digital kind, such as the new Apple Wallet. With this month’s update to iOS 15, iPhone’s latest operating system, Apple Wallet will store your driver’s license, car keys, boarding passes, tickets, vaccination card and any other form of ID. When you show your digitized driver’s license, it will automatically conceal your home address if you wish. To digitize any document to store in Apple Wallet or elsewhere, tap your phone’s camera app and snap a picture. I store mine using Google’s free app, “Stack” for Android. It makes documents quick to find. No more wasting time rummaging through Google Drive for my driver’s license . Eight U.S. states accept digitized ID […]

I get a lot of iPhone questions from readers, so I decided to buy a used iPhone SE for $95. What amazed me most is how pristine this thing is. It was listed on eBay as “Grade C,” which means lots of scratches. But it looks brand new. No wonder the seller, Second-Hand Phones, has a 99.8 percent approval rating. He was sold out when last time I checked. But I saw other pre-owned iPhones for as low as $72. My new iPhone SE is so tiny it looks like a phone from ten years ago, but came out in 2016. It’s less than five inches long and is only 2.3 inches wide. So why did it cost so much? […]
