“Do you know of any free, easy-to-use blog-type websites?” my niece asked, before heading for Costa Rica. “Google Slides,” I said. That may sound like a funny choice. Google Slides is typically used for PowerPoint-type presentations. But there’s no reason it can’t also be used for travel blogs. The recommended blog-creation tools, even the “kid-friendly” ones, are far more complicated than they need to be. My niece agreed. “I know Google Slides,” she said, “but I didn’t think to use it as a travel blog. That’s a good idea.” On a computer, go to slides.google.com and click on the blank presentation at the top, or on the “photo album” template. If you choose the photo album, you’ll get a traditional […]

I’m saving over $200 a year on magazine subscriptions with a free app called “Libby.” All you need is a library card. Once you sign in to the Libby app, available on a phone, a tablet or at libbyapp.com, you get access to 4,034 magazines. They also have 23,748 audio books and 57,401 e-books. You can borrow up to ten books, ten audio books and ten magazines at once. I checked out People Magazine’s special edition on the Beatles, Time Magazine’s issue on the Roosevelts and The Economist. Normally, The Economist alone would cost me at least $99 a year. I also looked at Reader’s Digest, The New Yorker and The Week Magazine, though I already have the paper copies. […]

If you don’t mind commercials, “Freevee” is a new, free channel from Amazon which can also be watched on the web. I tried it both ways, first watching on the web, then installing it from the Google Play Store on my TV, which I found under “apps.” It has a lot of kid favorites, like the animated dance movie “Leap,” as well as great selections for adults, like “Emma,” based on the book by Jane Austen, and “Knives Out,” starring the late great Christopher Plummer. When the Campbell’s soup commercial came on, I didn’t mind. I […]

Alexa, the voice inside the Echo smart speaker, has a lot of tricks up her sleeve. Did you know she makes a good soundbar? A soundbar connects to a TV to make programs easier to hear. Instead, you can use Alexa. Put her next to you on the sofa and say: “Alexa, connect.” She’ll take it from there– if your TV has Bluetooth. You’ll know in a minute if it doesn’t, because Alexa will tell you she can’t connect. Another Alexa trick is remembering where you put things. You can say: “Alexa, remember that I put my glasses on the kitchen counter.” Then, instead of searching for them, say: “Alexa, what did I ask you to remember?” Unfortunately, when I […]
