A lot of newspapers and magazines maintain public photo archives and nearly all of them are free. Recently, the Chicago Tribune” released its crime photo archive of “Gangsters and Grifters:” Al Capone and friends on the street and in the lineup. (They also spent a lot of time in Hot Springs, Ark.)

MAGAZINES ON PARADE

Having magazines on an iPad or Android tablet is a nice idea and costs just $10 a month with an app called “NextIssue.” The app came out two years ago but has improved a lot since then. Back in 2012, there were only 27 magazines available. Now there are 119 for the basic price, and more if you’re willing to pay $15 a month.  A free 30-day trial gives you an idea of what’s available, and a new feature allows you to print out the articles (handy for recipes). Our favorite magazine, “The Economist,” isn’t there, but then, several of its articles are free online each month at economist.com.

Google Glass enthusiasts make it sound like everyone will soon be wearing a glasses frame able to project a tiny display. None of this is breakthrough technology; it’s dependent on massive storage capacity and ultra-fast processing by somebody’s data service somewhere, like Google, or the NSA.

Use an upcoming facial recognition app while wearing Google Glasses and you will be able to glance at some people and instantly see their Facebook and LinkedIn histories as well as anything they might have posted on dating sites. A SLOW COMPUTER

We installed the 2014 version of Tune-Up Utilities, $50 from tune-up.com. A new feature called the “deactivator” was a huge help. It stopped programs from running in the background and slowing down our test computer.

Automatic backups are nice if your stuff is saved online, where fire, accident and disorganization can’t reach it. For us, it’s a lifesaver. If our file isn’t backed up online, we might never find it again.

NUMBERS REPORT: WATCHING TV ON YOUR PHONE

According to IPG Media Lab, TV viewers in the 18 to 24 age group are trending toward getting their shows on something else. About 20 percent mainly watch TV on their smartphone, 15 percent watch it on a tablet, and just 10 percent watch an actual TV. The remainder watch TV on a computer.
