Queen Isabel of Spain bragged she only bathed twice in her life: at birth and before her wedding. Louis XIV matched her, bath for bath; people said he smelled like a barnyard animal. (He also liked to dance in ballets, wearing only a golden clam shell.) Perfume was popular.
