Dan Rather Reports recently exposed counterfeit drugs filled with unsafe ingredients (boric acid, brick dust, highway paint and floor wax).

It’s estimated that 10 percent of the world’s medicine is counterfeit, but even a 1 percent rate in the U.S. is 34 million prescriptions.

“TruTags,” from TruTag Technologies, are edible tags containing information that can identify a real drug, making it easier to distinguish from the counterfeit.¬†Unlike the RFID (radio frequency) tags that have come into common use today, TruTags can be broken into pieces, or heated to 1000 degrees and still retain their information.

TruTag Technologies was just named the 2010 North American Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Innovation of the Year by Frost & Sullivan.
