The Wall Street Journal had an interesting short article recently about the number of Blackberry PDA users who are addicted to playing the “Brick Breaker” game that comes with the little handheld. You move a paddle back and forth to bounce a ball upward and knock out bricks. You get points and new levels as you go, and the current high scorer is a guy who has well over a million (points, that is).

Not mentioned in the article was the fact that the progenitor of this game, called “Little Brick Out,” was on the original Apple computer. Steve Wozniak, the designer of the Apple, liked to play it and insisted on having it in there. He also added color circuitry to the Apple so he could play “Little Brick Out” in color. As it turned out, color was the major selling point for the Apple in those early days. History is strange stuff.
