Internet Explorer usage dropped to under 50%, because of heavy competition from Firefox, Chrome and Safari. On mobile devices, it’s even less popular: 62 percent use something else. On desktops, it’s about half of all browsing use. A couple years ago it was 90 percent.

PAINT AND CREATE FOR KIDS

“Crayola Paint and Create” costs $3 and is a child play app for the iPad, with more than 40 activities. Kids’ fingers become colored pencils, paint brushes, crayons or markers that play games as they move them across the tablet screen to fill in coloring books. All artwork can be saved to the gallery, emailed, printed or uploaded to Facebook.

LIGHT BULB FINDER

Light Bulb Finder” for Android or iPhone/iPod/iPod Touch, got an award from the Environmental Protection Agency. It’s a free app that helps you switch from incandescent to energy-efficient bulbs. It displays bulb images, prices, environmental impact and info such as how long you need to own the bulb before it compares favorably to regular bulbs.

APP FINDS GOOD BUYS

“Flow Powered by Amazon” lets you point your iPhone toward the barcode on a book, game or other product in a store and find out what it costs on Amazon. You can also see reviews and if it’s a movie, get a trailer. (Kind of shifts the point of sale, doesn’t it?)

MOVIE TRIVIA APP FOR THE IPHONE

For iPhones, iPods and iPads: “Say What You See” is free to download, but you pay 99 cents for each new collection of puzzles. The latest, called “Blockbusters,” features 50 of the highest grossing movies of the last 50 years, transformed into puzzles.
