FROM YOUR FRIEND, COKIE ROBERTS

Cokie-RobertsA friend of ours recently got a “friend request” from Cokie Roberts, a best-selling author and journalist. Since she didn’t know Cokie, she was suspicious, and she should have been. There was no Cokie on the line.

About 44 percent of those who get a friend request on Facebook blindly accept it, according to Sophos, a research firm that conducted an experiment involving fake requests.  Posing as Facebook friends, the researchers were able to access people’s email addresses, where they went to school, birthdates, and in some cases, information on family and friends.  We should all go to facebook.com/privacy to limit what strangers can learn. It’s open season out there.
