Cherple is a free download for Windows and Mac that lets you send text messages from your computer to any cell phone. In its first two months, it has acquired 10 million users, mostly US, but also India, Canada, Brazil, Philippines, UK and China. It’s a good way to have a two-way text chatwithout a wireless contract. The cell phone user still has to pay, because they are paying for connection minutes, but the computer user doesn’t.

Cherple.com transmitted more than three trillion text messages last year. And according to a survey by the photo-sharing service, SnapMyLife, 46 percent of all cell phone users said text messaging was the most important feature of their phone.
