This is their first step in going national; a former executive from the big restaurant chain, Applebees, is a major investor but not the only one interested. About 50 iPad rivals were on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The 10.1-inch Motorola Xoom tablet got CNET’s “Best of Show” because of its fast dual-core processor, compatibility with the fastest 4G cellular network, its front-and-back facing cameras for video chatting, and its HDMI-out port, for connecting the tablet to a big-screen TV. The latest tablets from Acer will come in three sizes:4.8-inch, 7.1-inch and 10.1. All will use Honeycomb, the latest version of Android. ASUS TABLETS DEBUT AT CES 2011

The most interesting one, the Eee Pad Slider, has a slide-out keyboard. It has a 10.1 inch screen and cameras on the front and rear for easy video chatting. It comes with the Android 3.0 operating system and an optional 3G cellular connection. Another ASUS tablet, the “Transformer,” has a separate keyboard with docking station and a 16 hour battery life.
