FIXING THE PICTURE ONLINE
Photo editing doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. We’ve found a lot of free photo editors for use online. For example, go to Pixlr.com and click the “Express” link to get some amazing photo effects without having to download anything to your computer. It all happens in your browser window. We clicked on “Webcam” to let the website use our computer’s built-in camera to snap a picture. Then we added a frame and improved the color. Amazingly, we looked younger and better, which is just the way we see ourselves. We also tried uploading a photo stored on our machine. After that, we added text and clicked “autofix” to improve brightness and color automatically. Other tools include “airbrush,” “rotate,” [...]

Why buy Photoshop for more than a thousand dollars if all you need is the free version? Adobe, the maker of Photoshop, has just revamped its freebie website, Photoshop.com, with new tools for organizing and editing photos. They have an “Express Editor,” an “Express Uploader,” “Express Organizer” and “Express Slideshows.” We’ve tried them and they are super nice. Most users would need nothing else.

CS 4 BOOKS
Photoshop Creative Suite 4 came out recently in a bundle of programs so large that you can be excused for not knowing whether it’s worth upgrading from CS3. We’ve found a series of books that can guide you. They’re the “CS 4 on Demand” series, by Steve Johnson, $27 each from QuePublishing.com.

Adobe has a new Photoshop set called Photoshop CS4, which contains Photoshop plus other major programs, all for the somewhat staggering list price of $1,800. The computer to run them will be cheaper. However, just in case you want to spring for a lifetime hobby, here are a couple of books just out.

THE BIG PICTURE
The maker of “Snap Art” says the Sept. 15th cover of New Yorker Magazine was done with his program. “I’d recognize my baby anywhere,” he says. The New Yorker is famed for its artful covers and many people have them framed. The editors are silent on whether that particular cover was done with Snap Art, a plug-in program for Adobe Photoshop.
