“PlaySay” for iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad is a free game that teaches you Spanish by giving you practice with a real person from another country. Listen to a phrase in Spanish, then tap the record button to record yourself repeating it; your Spanish-speaking partner will hear only the English equivalent. When he or she responds, you’ll hear the answer in Spanish, with an English translation.

MyGengo.com offers what they think are better translation services than what you get from a computer just translating literally. For five cents a word, you get a native speaker. For 12 cents a word, you get professional translation suitable for publication. For 17 cents a word, you get that plus proofreading.

Google’s Fast Flip gives you thumbnail images of a variety of magazines and newspapers. Flip through them to decide what you want to read. Google Goggles (on Android phones only, for now) let you perform a search by submitting a photograph. It then looks through its database of billions of images – including landmarks, logos, places, books, album covers, artwork, etc., to give you info about that photo. Google plans to extend Goggles to computers with the new Chrome operating system, coming in 2010. The Oxford English Dictionary, or “OED” as its fans call it, is, by definition, so to speak, the last word in definitions. The printed edition — 20 large volumes in all — sells for $895 a set at OED.com until the end of January.

Hola! This is the best approach to learning Spanish we’ve ever found, short of spending time in another country. Joy spent a lot of time with the new Berlitz Spanish Premier program for Windows and Macintosh because, after all, it was her duty. Then she spent a lot more time because it was so much fun.
