Forty years ago, Bob wrote about an idea that may finally be gaining adherents. As a homeowner, he thought it was ridiculous that everybody on the block had their own lawnmower. Why not just have one and pass it around? Why try to own everything if you can share it? To pay for repairs or replacement, you would all contribute to a common fund, maybe monthly or once a year. It took the Internet to move this idea along.

Apple is offering “iWork,” a program group similar to Microsoft Office. It’s free for Windows and Mac, It’s available but still in beta testing. What does that mean? Might have some bugs. Probably.

PdaNet is free for Android phones with a “4G” connection, and lets you use your cellular connection to get your computer on the Internet, in the absence of Wi-Fi. This is called “tethering,” and for a while it was banned from the Google Play store. Tether your devices using a USB cable or a Bluetooth connection.

Yahoo mail recently started forcing users to upgrade to a new version, or stop using Yahoo. This came off as pushy and a little scary for some of our readers. The supposed benefits are faster email, less spam, and an easier-to-use design. But not everybody is on board. The biggest complaint concerns Yahoo’s new policy of scanning your email messages so they can target ads. Google’s Gmail has done this since its beginning, and it doesn’t bother us. It’s just robots selecting the ads, and we’d rather see relevant than irrelevant ones. Browser extensions are much like apps. But instead of something you install on your phone, extensions are useful when surfing the web. The trick is not to install too many of them or they’ll slow down your surfing.
