SOME ONLINE COURSES ARE OFF

After logging on to a few free college courses at Coursera.org, which we wrote about last week, we have a few more choice words – and we will try to keep them printable. A lot of the courses are from major colleges, including the well-regarded Ivy League. Too bad. What we learned above all, is that everything depends on the professor, and some of them are very bad. The real duds were in the humanities and social sciences.

FREE ONLINE COURSES ARE PROLIFERATING

Wow! This is the way to go! Coursera.org offers more than 100 free courses from universities such as Cal Tech, UC Berkeley, Rice, John Hopkins, U.of Illinois, and 11 others. The number of students is approaching a million. Bill Gates’ favorite online learning site, KhanAcademy, has hundreds more college courses, many on technical subjects, and they too are all free. Is this a trend? Is it the future? We certainly hope so. Considering the cost of attending a major university these days, there has to be an alternative. “Workfu” uses your connections to find you a new job. It’s still in the testing phase, but you can sign up at Workfu.com using a Twitter account. Signing up for Twitter is free. A Workfu score tells you how likely a job is to fit your needs.

HireVue is a free app that lets job candidates do interviews from their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

GetHired.com offers free job postings for employers. The GetHired link can then be posted on CraigsList or other popular sites. The site encourages video resumes and virtual interviews through video chatting.

USING LINKEDIN

Using LinkedIn” by Patrice-Anne Rutledge, $20 from quepublishing.com, has some great tips. For example, to find old friends from college, click “add connection” and then click “classmates.” Put in the years you were there and what you studied. When Joy did this for the University of Southern California, over a thousand names showed up. Each name has an “invite” link, in case you want to add them to your network.
