LocalMotors.com is sponsoring a contest to see who can design the best 3D-printed car. You have to enter before May 12 and the winning design gets $5000. The car will be printed at a manufacturing show in Chicago in September.

If this all sounds too fantastic for words, keep in mind that Local Motors will still have to add a motor. The folks at LocalMotors say it will be an electric motor. Wheels would probably help too.

You can get free 3D design software at Easel.com. Big-time CAD (Computer Aided Design) programs sell pretty cheaply on the Internet if you’re willing to buy a used copy or an old version. It’s amazing how much the price drops on a perfectly good program as soon a later version comes out.
